Bowls Green Maintenance For September

by TurfCareBlog

Bowls Green Maintenance For September, as we head into September, this month becomes bit of a transition month for bowling greens. The playing season is coming to an end and we are preparing for our end of year renovation. This month we aim to carry out our renovations before the soil temps get to low for recovery.

  Tasks for September

Continue to remove the morning dew from the green

  • Cutting
  • Renovation works
  • Watering
  • Disease control
  • Worm Cast

Dew

Throughout August, continue with brushing off the morning dew at your earliest convenience to reduce the disease risk. Light brushing will control the grain and improve ball roll.

Cutting

Continue to maintain height (4-5mm) until your end of season games have finished. After your season has finished, gradually raise your height to (6-8mm) to protect the grass going into autumn/winter.

Renovation works

Over the last 4 to 6 weeks, you will have arranged your dates for your end of season works. This would have consisted of your contractor booked in for your preferred date if you use one, and your materials ordered. With all this in place you will be ready to start you end of season renovations.

– A heavy scarification in 2 to 3 directions to open up the surface

– Hollow tining

– Overseed with a fine turf seed mix @ 20-35g/m2

– Top-dress with a 60/40 loam/sand dressing @ 3-5 kg/m2

– Apply a low nitrogen autumn feed. Something with a low N (Nitrogen) and higher P (Phosphorus) and K (Potassium). This will encourage root growth and harden the turf ahead of winter.

Watering

Although at this present time we are seeing a large amount of rainfall, if this stops, then we need to monitor the soil to make sure it stays moist until the seed has germinated. If the rainfall stops and the soil starts to dry out, then we may need to use irrigation watering until the seed has fully germinated.

Disease Control

Continue to monitor for any signs of disease. Watch out for Fusarium (Microdochium Patch) which is common in damp conditions.

Worm Cast

We are back to that time of year again; with the damper conditions we are going to start to see more and more worm cast. If possible, allow them to dry and the use a cane switch to break the worm cast up. If you try to clear them with a brush in the morning when there wet, then they are going to smear and leave a mess.
