Creating a Key- Spiking is just a bonus ,NOT a must during renovations

Notes

  • Scarification is based on the minimum directions, often more is required this can only come down to the judgement of the groundstaff
  • Sarel spiking, in my opinion or any form of shallow spiking to depths no deeper than a inch is helpful in creating more holes for seed to sit in, rather than just relying on the scarification grooves alone.
  • Spiking is just a bonus if you can spike to 25 mm but NOT a must during renovations. Anything that creates holes 10-15mm deep like a sarel or spiker can only help get the seed into more places. If area lifts/plucks during spiking, either go shallower or leave it if you don’t have time to water to soften to allow the spiker to penetrate. Cluster tines are ideal for this purpose, but many don’t have l am sure.
  • Pre seed fertiliser, personally l like to add this once top-dressed but also aware many like to apply post topdressing. The rule with pre seeder, is if you have a lot of existing grass left, you probably don’t need a pre seed fertiliser, if you have battered your square there is a greater need for it.
  • Do take a little extra time restoring the ends, its a long winter looking at puddled/low ends.

Loam- 6-8 bags is a guide and you also may need 2-3 bags extra, just for topping up low ends.

I hope you found this wall planner helpful and if you do print off and pin up on your shed wall, please let me know and also anything missing just get in contact with me in the reply box below.
