Groundsperson Q&A – Alexia Doughty

Groundsperson Q&A – Alexia Doughty is a our latest in our series of interviews with our community. In this insightful blog, l ask Alexia eight questions including, her best and worst parts of the role and the best piece of advise to pass onto our community.

What is your current role?

My role at Stratford sports club is Head of Grounds. I used to work for a gardening group and we had a task at the sports club to do which where I met Nick Pepper the Head of Grounds at the time, who introduced me to the industry. Then he offered me a job and I have loved it ever since.

Biggest thing you have learnt this year?

The biggest thing I have learned this year is that I can’t always please everyone but if I try my hardest at least they can see the hard work I put into my job. I am learning everyday in my role. I’d like to increase my knowledge in Cricket which is my favorite part of the job.

What are the best and worst parts of the job?

Best part of the job is the summer during the cricket season. Worst part is leaf collecting during the winter.

What training and developments are you undertaking at the moment?

I have just started my level 3 at Myerscough College to increase my knowledge in Groundskeeping.

Best piece of advice to pass on?

Best piece of advice I have been given is to not take criticism to heart, take it as motivation to prove them wrong or a learning curve.

Favourite bit of turf machinery?

My favorite machine is a John Deere 4066R Tractor. You can do so much with a tractor.

What makes a good turfie in your opinion?

A good Grounds Keeper is someone that works hard, motivates others in the industry and has respect for other opinions as I believe every Groundskeeper is different and we can really learn from one another.

How do we encourage the next generation of ground staff?

To encourage more Ground staff into the industry I believe doing more presentations in schools would be great until I met Nick, I had no idea what a groundskeeper was.
