How to Deal with Moss on Sports Turf . Moss can be a nightmare on sports pitches, making them look unsightly and hold moisture. But why does it thrive on your sports turf? As a working Groundsperson, I’ve battled moss – it’s a real challenge. I’ll dive into the causes and explore effective solutions.
Why Moss Grows on Sports Pitches
- Poor drainage and waterlogging
- Compacted soil and inadequate aeration
- Low mowing heights and excessive shade and poor airflow
- Imbalanced/low soil pH and nutrient deficiencies
Effective Moss Control Strategies
- Improve drainage with aeration and sand dressing (unless a cricket square)
- Adjust mowing heights to avoid scalping and increase frequency
- Balance soil pH and fertilise with iron-based products and overseed after if areas left bare after iron treatment
- Remove thatch and overseed bare patches
