What Could Happen if Organisations Work Collectively on Job Listing Salaries?

by TurfCareBlog

What Could Happen if Organisations Work Collectively on Job Listing Salaries? Is a blog that calls for organisations to come together collectively on the advertising on pay on their job listings pages.

We have Greenkeepers/Groundspersons out there on or around minimum wage, for our industry to move forward we need organisations to work together to help bring about the next generation who can be recruited and retained into the industry.

We all have parts to play, but l am concerned are industry job listing pages working together in one aim?

Taking a Stand!

I propose that all jobs listing boards Pitchcare, GMA, Turf Business and others all reassess their posting on job listings in light of GMA/BIGGA pay rates. If it’s agreed across the industry these pay rates are achievable and realistic to employers, why are roles for considerably less being promoted when our aim as a industry is bring in these recommendations.

What are the Pay Recommendations?

The GMA l could only find there 2022 recommendations – Maybe having this information easily available and up to date would also be beneficial to all including those looking to list roles such roles like a Grounds/Estate Manager- https://thegma.org.uk/system/files/documents/resources/gma_salary_survey_2022_final.pdf

I also had issues finding recommended pay scales for BIGGA and in turn for greenkeepers, sure there reasons for this but also doesn’t help with the awareness and promotion of the recommendations. Its not great for me also as someone who has a jobs listing page in knowing which roles l will choose or not to list.

Suggestions

As a suggestion to possibly expand on, consider any roles paying within recommended rates get extra promotion via the boards and any paying lower than recommended rates as example getting less.

l suggest could ideas could be discussed collectively unless they already are? But certainly not something l am aware of as a working groundsperson.

Could employers be given extra benefits for advertising industry recommendations of pay, could ones paying the high end of GMA/BIGGA recommendations get free listings or incentives?

I am assuming the listings being free won’t be enough of an incentive, but if done collectively it will send out a clear message, a message of a collective industry who are working together on promoting a fair wage.

Just ideal Thinking Maybe?

Maybe this will bring up more questions than answers, but at least organisations are in the rooms to rule it out and maybe incorporate something that does work!

Just imagine if these job boards/organisations worked together surely some actions could be put on listings going forward, even if each job listing page/site had industry pay recommendations at the top of the page.

One Thing is Right we need to Work Collectively!

Maybe my idea is too simplistic but l believe these organisations working together collectively could really bear fruit with collaborative actions. Working together for one goal of helping the industry meet BIGGA/GMA recommended pay rates over the next few years.

Currently there appears to be no joined up approach on job boards including my own and with the aim of reaching GMA/BIGGA pay recommendations, maybe this is one area the industry can work together on.

As l say, maybe my ideas aren’t the one that’s going to change the industry, but my hope is to encourage the right organisations/businesses in and around the table and maybe the answers can be found there.

Summary

  • To rule in or out my suggestion, but at least be open to speaking collectively.
  • I had issues finding GMA/BIGGA pay recommendations, maybe this is something that needs looking at to make it easily accessible to members and non members (a high number of people).
  • Calling for a collective push towards the advertising/highlighting of GMA/BIGGA pay recommendations across all job listing sites/pages along with free promotion of listings or benefits to those who pay within recommended rates.
  • Consider setting a minimum amount collectively that roles will not be advertised for on job listings pages/sites.

I don’t pretend to have all the answers, its also more complicated that it appears, l am just writing from a place of passion for the industry and if you rule out my suggestion just maybe consider – What Could Happen if Organisations Work Collectively on Job Listing Salaries?

As a community, what do you think is there any merit in what l say, are there other views if so leave comments in the reply box below.

This subject including the advertising of roles below recommended rates, is not new to me as in this blow from 2022 – https://turfcareblog.com/should-turf-care-job-roles-be-listed-below-recommended-pay-rates/
